Disney's The Lion King : In Numbers
To celebrate the return of Disney's The Lion King to Bristol Hippodrome in September 2019, I thought I'd share some incredible facts and figures about this record-breaking show:-
🦁 The Lion King first opened on Broadway in November 1997.
🦁 The iconic show has been performed in nine different languages and has played in more than 100 cities in 20 countries on every continent except Antarctica.
🦁 25 global productions have now been seen by more than 95 million people.
🦁 This year, The Lion King is celebrating 20 years at London’s Lyceum Theatre.
🦁Since the UK premiere in London on Tuesday 19th October 1999, the show has entertained more than 15 million theatregoers.
🦁It remains the West End’s best-selling stage production and the sixth longest-running West End musical of all time.
🦁 The original score from the animated film was expanded for the stage and now features 15 musical numbers.
🦁 The director, Julie Taymor, made Broadway history by becoming the first woman to win the Tony Award® for Best Director of a Musical.
🦁 During the last UK tour, the production was transported across the country in 23 massive trucks, and took days to load into each venue with technical teams working 24-hour split shifts to prepare for each opening!
🦁 It was the first production to ever sell standing space in the Bristol Hippodrome in 2012.
The Lion King will be performed at The Bristol Hippodrome from 7 September to 23 November 2019. Watch the trailer here.
Tickets go on general sale next Wednesday 27 February at 8am (ATG TheatreCard presale: Tuesday 26 February, 8am).
